What to do after a power surge

On May 16, an unprecedented power surge caused disruption to more than 3800 homes and businesses in south Georgetown. Read the letter from the President & CEO of Halton Hills Hydro here.

Safety is our primary concern and affected residents are asked to check the devices in their homes.

Everything in my home is working fine, should I still be concerned?

  • Check all life-saving equipment in your home:
    • Smoke Alarms
    • Carbon Monoxide Alarms
    • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs)
    • Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)
  • If you have any concerns about any equipment in your home, we recommend calling a Licensed Electrical Contractor. https://findacontractor.esasafe.com/
  • If everything is working correctly, you are not required to contact an electrician but may elect to do so if you are unsure.

Part of my home is without power or certain outlets or switches are not working. What should I do?

  • If you smelled smoke, saw sparks or have outlets, switches or breakers that are not working, Contact a licensed electrical contractor to check your home.  https://findacontractor.esasafe.com/
  • Check all life-saving equipment in your home (either yourself or the electrician can check):
    • Smoke Alarms
    • Carbon Monoxide Alarms
    • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs)
    • Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)

My breakers, outlets and switches are fine but some of my electronics, appliances or power bars don’t work. What should I do?

  • Unplug any damaged electronics, power bars or equipment
  • Check all life-saving equipment in your home:
    • Smoke Alarms
    • Carbon Monoxide Alarms
    • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs)
    • Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)
  • If you have any concerns about any equipment in your home, we recommend calling a Licensed Electrical Contractor. https://findacontractor.esasafe.com/
  • If everything is working correctly, you are not required to contract an electrician but may elect to do so if you are unsure.

What about the cost for replacing damaged equipment?

  • Make a list of items you believe were affected with a description of the damage. Include any costs incurred through a licensed electrical contractor.
  • Claims are being handled by Travelers Insurance Company of Canada.
  • Send us this list in an e-mail to HHHclaim@travelers.com  with your name, address, daytime phone number and e-mail address
  • Travelers Insurance Company of Canada will be in touch regarding your claim.

What if I’ve already submitted a claim?

  • If you have already submitted a claim, you do not need to re-submit.
  • Travelers Insurance Company of Canada will be in touch regarding your claim.

What caused the power surge on May 16th?

  • Halton Hills Hydro is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident and will provide more details when they become available.
